Chi miigwech (many thanks) to the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine for their continued partnership in our efforts to bring programs and opportunities for youth in tribal nations .. in July we hosted the first ever VetCamp at Leech Lake Reservation. VetCamp is an interactive education program of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Middle school and highschool students had the opportunity to choose their own adventure style case study where they were responsible for "Molly" their fictional canine patient. Students worked in groups and acted as veterinarians where they had the opportunity to learn more about anatomy, diseases, possible careers working with animals (small and large), how to "fix" a broken leg, how to suture, and many other activities ....
A pet wellness clinic was held in conjunction with Vet Camp, offered by the University of Minnesota SIRVS group (Student Initiative for Reservation Veterinary Services).
A special thanks to Amanda Anderson of the University of MN VetCamp for making this possible and for vet student Claire for leading the camp. The kids were excited and curious and very engaged. Several of the kids have expressed a desire to become veterinarians! We would also like to thank Leech Lake community member Shirley Nordrum for all of her help in recruiting youth for the camp, and to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and to Cass Lake ALC for supporting and hosting VetCamp.
